In 2016, the headline that attracted the most eyeballs on the online platform LinkedIn was an article that read “‘After work’ is what determines your future!”.
It was shared 374,000 times.
The article is simply written and speaks about how the ‘downtime’ in your life is actually what determines your trajectory – being able to squeeze everything you can out of every minute you have.
In truth, it is the classic story that most immigrants face – they come to a country with nothing but the shirt on their back and have no choice but to work day AND night in order to carve out a future for themselves.
People like Westfield’s Frank Lowy and Meriton’s Harry Triguboff would attest to this.
Both immigrants, they managed to carve out some of the largest property empires in Australia’s history.
Truth is though, when I think of people like Lowy and Triguboff, their trajectories seem so out of reach I find it hard to relate.
I prefer to think of my wife.
In the 3.5 days that our daughter has been in daycare, I have watched my wife run a growing consulting business, work on a white paper, co-ordinate new staff and launch a podcast.
She is a true example of what it takes to hustle, stay focused and make every minute count.
Like Lowy and Triguboff, she has the same amount of hours in the day as everyone else.
She is simply prepared to work in ways that most others aren’t.
These days it’s all too easy to pull out the “busy” card for not being where we want to be – work is too hectic, the kids are a handful, it’s not the right time.
But these days managing a busy life isn’t extraordinary.
These days it’s just what we need to do to keep up.
And while sometimes it can feel overwhelming, if we want to carve out a great life for ourselves, we need to start looking for the gaps where we can be smarter with the time that we have.
Otherwise we will continue to get what we’ve always got.
Extraordinary lives aren’t created by doing ordinary things.
If you want to get smart around leveraging your own time, reach out and ask me about some of the opportunities in today’s property market and get schooled up with this month’s market report.
It holds all of the key stats you need for a big-picture understanding of the market so you can get on with things rather than trawl through hours of articles every month.
